USS Donates Over 2,800 Bottles of Water to Marion, KY

Over the last month, employees at United Systems participated in United Systems’ Charitable Giving Funds’ bi-annual food drive. As a part of ongoing charitable activities, United Systems holds food drives in the summer and fall each year to assist with combating hunger in our local community. Over 22 million children depend on school breakfast and lunch programs. For many of these children, summer vacation means worrying about the source of their next meal. Unfortunately, estimates show that less than 3 million of those children are served through summer food programs, with rural communities being hit hardest.

Additionally, the City of Marion, KY, located roughly 50 miles northeast of United Systems headquarters at Southwest One Industrial Park in Benton, KY, finds themselves in the midst of an urgent water crisis. Saturday morning, June 18th, a state of emergency was declared by Governor Andy Beshear for the City due to a water shortage crisis.

The City is battling a water shortage as a result of Lake George, the primary reservoir for Marion’s residents and businesses, being drained after a levee failure, in addition to limited rainfall and unseasonably hot weather. As a result, the National Guard began distributing bottled water for Marion residents to use for drinking and cooking Thursday, June 23rd, at the old National Guard Armory at 131 Rochester Ave. in Marion, KY.

As a result of our bi-annual food drive, United Systems’ employees collected 5,923 pounds of non-perishable goods and over 2,500 bottles of water – making this United Systems’ most successful food drive to date. On Wednesday, July 22nd, Region Manager North, Scott Smith, and Vice President Brian Boyd delivered roughly 2,800 bottles of water to the distribution location at the old National Guard Armory in Marion, KY.
